Portrait of a Graduate

The Alamogordo School District is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking "Portrait of a Graduate" initiative, a comprehensive framework designed to prepare students for success in the 21st century. This forward-thinking educational approach focuses on developing a well-rounded set of skills, attributes, and competencies that will empower students to excel in an ever-evolving world.

The "Portrait of a Graduate" initiative is a strategic vision that reflects the Alamogordo Public School District's commitment to providing students with a holistic education that extends beyond traditional academic subjects. Through extensive collaboration with educators, parents, community leaders, and industry experts, the district has identified a set of essential skills and qualities that will define the graduates of Alamogordo schools.

  • Integrity: Instilling a strong sense of ethical behavior and integrity, students will learn the value of honesty, responsibility, and ethical decision-making. This competency prepares them to navigate complex situations with integrity and compassion.

  • Financial Literacy: Recognizing the importance of financial well-being in today's society, students will gain practical knowledge in managing personal finances, understanding economic principles, and making informed financial decisions.

  • Critical Thinking: Students will develop the ability to analyze information critically, assess different perspectives, and make informed judgments. This competency fosters intellectual curiosity and the capacity to navigate the complexities of the modern world.

  • Responsibility: Through fostering a sense of responsibility, students will learn to take ownership of their actions and contribute positively to their communities. This competency encourages civic engagement and social awareness.

  • Problem Solving: Equipping students with problem-solving skills, they will be prepared to address challenges with creativity and resilience. This competency nurtures a mindset that seeks innovative solutions to real-world problems.

  • Effective Communication: Effective communication, both written and verbal, is a cornerstone of success. Students will develop the skills to express themselves clearly, collaborate with diverse audiences, and engage in meaningful dialogue.

As part of the implementation process, Alamogordo School District will integrate these competencies across the curriculum, engage in professional development for educators, and collaborate with community partners to provide students with diverse learning opportunities.

Career & Technical Education Coordinator Anna Alday stated, "We are excited to unveil this forward-thinking initiative that equips our students with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world. The competencies outlined in our 'Portrait of a Graduate' program are aligned with the demands of today's society and will serve as a strong foundation for our students' future success."

The Alamogordo School District invites parents, students, educators, and community members to join in this transformative journey toward producing graduates who are well-prepared, adaptable, and poised to thrive in an ever-changing future.

How is Alamogordo Public Schools working to ensure students gain these skills?

Alamogordo Public Schools uses the Boys Town skills and curriculum to teach middle and high school students important life skills that are reflected in the Portrait of a Graduate.  Each of the skills, Integrity, Critical Thinking, Responsibility, Problem Solving, and Effective Communication are embedded within the Boys Town curriculum and are implemented into weekly lessons by teachers to meet the goals established with the Portrait of a Graduate. Financial Literacy is an embedded component in district curriculums starting in elementary school.  It is also offered as an optional math class that can be taken at any time throughout a student's high school career.
